Hot water systems

No hot water, not enough of it, or a unit that has started leaking. We work out whether the one you have is worth repairing before anyone starts pricing a new one.

Repair Plenty of units fail on a part that can be replaced. Worth knowing which kind you have before anyone prices a new one.

When to call us

What the unit is doing usually points straight at the part that has failed.

  • 01

    Nothing hot at all

Commonly the element, the thermostat or the pilot, and all three are replaceable parts. Worth checking before you price a whole new unit.

  • 02

Hot water that runs out fast

Either the tank is undersized for the household or only part of it is heating. Which one it is changes the fix completely.

  • 03

    Water pooling under the unit

A leaking cylinder is not repairable. Once the tank itself has gone the unit gets replaced, and leaving it risks whatever is underneath.

  • 04

Rusty water from the hot tap

If the cold side runs clear and the hot does not, that points at the tank lining rather than the mains. It is the quickest test you can do yourself.

What is involved

  1. 01

We find out what it is doing

No hot water, not enough, or water where it should not be. The symptom narrows it down before anything comes apart.

  2. 02

    Repair is looked at first

Elements, thermostats and valves are all replaceable. If the unit is worth fixing we say so, and you get the position in writing either way.

  3. 03

    A replacement gets sized

A new unit is matched to the household and the space it has to live in, not to whatever happened to be there before. Getting that wrong is why people run out of hot water.

  4. 04

    Installed, tested, taken away

Connected, filled and run hot at the tap before we leave, and the old unit goes with us rather than sitting beside the house.

A failed unit, swapped out

The old system came out and a new Vulcan unit went in, with the copper and gas lines re-run cleanly along the wall so it is easy to get at when it next needs servicing.

New Vulcan gas hot water unit installed externally with copper and gas lines run cleanly along the wall.

What customers say

  • Michael Tran Hot water replacement
Jonathan fitted a new hot water system to replace the old leaking one at my rental property. He did a great job and good pricing. Would recommend to others, nice fella and clean job.
  • Kevin Quach Renovation plumbing
He guided me on what plumbing works that needed to be done to ensure my property was up to standards and safe.

More hot water work

  • Two continuous flow gas units mounted side by side on a brick wall with the copper run between them.
Two continuous flow units on one wall. Sizing is the whole job here: one unit could not have carried the house.
  • A storage hot water cylinder installed against a brick wall with copper pipework and an isolating valve.
A storage unit on the return. The isolating valve goes in where somebody can actually reach it, not where it is quickest to fit.

Common questions

Can my hot water system be repaired instead of replaced?

Often, yes. Elements, thermostats, valves and pilot assemblies are all replaceable parts. The exception is a leaking cylinder: once the tank itself has failed the unit is replaced. We tell you which of the two you are looking at before you spend anything.

How do I know if mine is near the end?

Rather than going off its age, we would rather look at the condition it is actually in. Rust in the hot water, a tank that sweats, or a unit that has needed repeated repairs all say more than the year on the label.

Do you work on electric, gas and solar units?

Yes, repair and replacement on all three, at homes and at rental properties.

Can you deal with the tenant directly?

Yes. A fair amount of this work comes through landlords and agents, and we are happy to arrange access with the tenant so you are not the one coordinating it.

Tell us the make and roughly how old the unit is, and whether it is gas or electric. That is usually enough for a straight answer on repair against replacement, and a written price before anything starts.
